Digital Marketing Needs To Consider About Privacy Issue

Digital marketing becomes more and more important for marketers to build up brand awareness and attract customers to purchase. By tracking customers’ journey, marketers can collect customers’ data and predict their purchase behavior for next step. Based on this, they can make some arrangement to prepare and deliver relative products to customers in time. During this time, data collecting can increase some privacy issues of customers.

According to my experience, sometimes I just search some information for homework, such as airline companies and car insurance companies. Few days later, when I watched YouTube, I would get some relative advertisement. It makes me feel like someone is watching me, which makes me feel uncomfortable.

It is obvious that collecting consumers’ data can help marketers to provide better service and shopping experience. On the other hand, some consumers may become worry about their privacy. According to the research, there are around 70% Australian are worried about it. So how to deal with this problem? Here are some tips:

  • Opt-in and opt-out which legislated in Spam Act 2003 should be considered about. For example, in the website, marketer need to provide a tick option for customers to choose whether they want to receive brand information in future or not.
  • PCI complain need to be considered about when collecting consumers’ financial information is needed for the payment steps. Up to 2018, the PCI complain is required by Australia government.

    1. Yea i also met similar problems these days. I got many calls from power companies which are really annoying. I think customers privacy need to be protected, otherwise the data collection from companies will make people feel insecure.

    1. Thanks for sharing! I can quite understand how your feel. Marketers just want to collect our data to provide better service, but some time these data can not be protected well. It is obvious that marketers need to pay more attention on this issue to win back customers’ trust!
